At least four people lost their lives in Fadeyi and Akoka areas of Lagos State in the wee hours of Wednesday after hoodlums went violent.
It was gathered that an elderly woman was also shot by one of the hoodlums on Akorounfayo Street at Fadeyi, but was later rushed to a nearby hospital where she is responding to treatment.
According to an eyewitness, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, two of the victims were taxi drivers.
He said, “Some hoodlums staged a carnival on Tuesday but extended the celebration till Wednesday morning for unknown reasons.
“The thugs seized the opportunity to rob and steal. They also vandalised vehicles on Majiyagbe Street, Odunlade and Awoseyin streets in Somolu. They later went to Abule Ijesa and Akoka where they damaged properties and shot into the air sporadically.
“Two taxi drivers died when they were hit by stray bullets while two other guys were also killed at Akoka. A bread vendor was also shot but she didn’t die.”
PUNCH Metro gathered that the hoodlums also proceeded to Mushin and robbed some houses along the railway line before escaping.
Our correspondent gathered that because the incident occurred very early in the morning, the hoodlums operated unhindered as policemen did not come on time.
A resident, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said the culprits at Somolu were a gang known as EFCC Boys.
He said, “For the past two weeks now, residents of Somolu have been held to ransom by the hoodlums who unleashed terror on them. The hoodlums who are not more than 10 have been attacking residents and destroying properties in the community at will.
“The gang branded itself the EFCC Boys and are notorious for wanton destruction of properties and attack on innocent members of the community. Members of this gang are identifiable and the police know them.
“Through their activities, they have succeeded in creating fear among residents who always run away to avoid trouble whenever they appear. They have become so lawless that the police in the area could not even apprehend them. In some instances, members of the gang have been known to attack policemen sent to arrest themx.
“Whenever they have an issue to settle with residents or sent by their godfathers to attack their perceived opponents or those who offended them, the gang attacks them with all manner of weapons. Every attack is always bloody.”
The Police Public Relations Officer for the state command, Mr. Joseph Jaiyeoba, told our correspondent on the telephone that two people were killed.
He said, “Two people were killed on Akorounfayo Street, Fadeyi, around 4:35am.
“Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad have been directed to go there but no arrest has been made.”
When quizzed on efforts made by the command to address the incessant violence in the area, Jaiyeoba said the police were having a dialogue with the warring factions.
“We had security meetings recently with Odi-Olowo Local Council Development Area and we’re still having talks with the religious leaders in the area and other elders in the community so that we can put an end to the violence,” he said.
