UNIBEN FEMALE HOSTEL GONE ABLAZE WITH FIRE

Another school disaster was Thursday averted as hundreds of female students of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) narrowly escaped death from an early hour inferno that gutted their three-storey hostel building.

We gathered that the fire started at about 1am from the last floor of the building and spread to other floors of the Hall II of the female hostel located inside the main campus of the university at Ugbowo.

Each of the floors of the three-storey hostel building is occupied by 200, 300 and 400 students respectively.

Although no life was lost in the inferno, several students sustained injuries while jumping from the top floors.

The injured ones were said to have been taken to the school’s health centre before they were finally transferred to an undisclosed hospital for further medical attention.

The Public Relations officer of UNIBEN, Harrison Osarenren confirmed the fire incident.

He said the fire started from a room inside the hostel, adding that the cause of the incident could be attributed to electrical fault.

He added that items in some of the affected rooms were destroyed and those that sustained burnt injuries were few and that those injured have been taken to hospital for treatment.

The minor, offended by the act, reported the matter to the Director of the School and a teacher. The matter was later reported to the victim’s mother who, in turn, reported it to the police.

WIFE WITH BOYFRIEND BEAT HUSBAND TO DEAD

Tragedy struck in Ikpamodo Village, Enugu-Ezike in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State last weekend when a housewife, (names withheld), her three children and the woman’s boyfriend, allegedly beat the husband to death.

The deceased was a popular bicycle repairer in the town. He was a Catholic.
His offence: The late bicycle repairer was accused by his widow of disturbing her with his early morning prayers. The widow is a native doctor.

A family source told Daily Sun that the woman, had allegedly been tormenting her husband and even built her own house, demarcating her husband’s compound with a big fence.

On the day, the man was murdered, she was said to have told her husband that she was not comfortable with the manner in which he had been disturbing her charms by saying long prayers every morning. But the husband, a devout Roman Catholic, told her that he had never supported her practice as a native doctor.

A serious argument ensued between them which led to physical attack. Another man, said to be her boyfriend, who is also a native doctor, was alleged to have joined her in attacking the deceased. The man’s children rushed to the scene and instead of separating their parents, allegedly assisted in beating their father with sticks and logs of wood. The man slumped and died. Sensing that her husband had died, the widow, her children as well as her “external husband” took to their heels, abandoning the man’s body..

Neighbours and villagers arrived the scene. They took the body to the Ogrute General Hospital, but the doctor confirmed him dead. His body was later deposited at the hospital’s mortuary. The matter was reported at Ogrute police station. The suspects were promptly detained before being transferred to the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Enugu. There was tension in the community. The youths organized themselves and set the six-room apartment of the widow ablaze.

One of the irate youths who spoke to our reporter, but did not want to be named, said: “This is an abomination in our community. Nobody has ever committed such sacrilege. That is the reason we decided to take the law into our own hands and burn her building to serve as a deterrent to any other person who may try such evil act again”
When our reporter visited Ikpamodo community yesterday, the man had been buried even as normalcy is gradually returning there.

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) for Ogrute Division, Buulus Maaji, was not available for comments when our reporter visited the station. The Police Public Relations Officer, state command, Ebere Amaraizu, said on phone that he was yet to be officially briefed on the incident.

MAN ACCUSED WIFE OF SLEEPING WITH THE FATHER

While waiting for the Easter celebration to commence properly last Sunday, residents of Lambe Street, Ago-Palace Way, Okota area of Lagos State were jolted from sleep, following loud painful cries from a neighbour’s apartment at 3, Lambe Street.

They rushed into the apartment only to realize that the scream was that of a woman who was being brutalized by her husband over claims that she was flirting with his own father. To their chagrin, they also found the lifeless body of their one-year-old male child lying in a pool of blood.

CONFUSION as police arrive: Confused, some of the neighbours quickly rushed out and contacted the police at Ago-Okota Division on sighting the corpse. On arriving the scene, detectives arrested the man and rushed the woman to a nearby hospital. The wife, who was simply identified as Mrs. Nnamdi, is currently lying unconscious in an hospital. The husband allegedly used hot pressing iron to inflict wounds all over her body.

A neighbour who spoke with Crime Alert said the man, identified as Mr. Henry Nnamdi, had alleged that the wife was sleeping with his own father and that the only child they had was not his biological child. A neighbour who craved for anonymity told Crime Alert: “The man killed his baby boy by hitting his head on the ground. The day was still dark when we started hearing screams from their apartment. Some of us who came out of our apartments following the screams contemplated whether to go in or not, but while we were still doing this, the screams intensified and the woman started shouting that he was using hot pressing iron on her. We then forced the door open. When we got in, we found the woman tied to a chair and their baby was lying dead on the floor. Those who couldn’t stand the sight ran out and contacted the police.”

Allegation of infidelity: Police sources said the incident blew open after the man allegedly tortured the wife following a quarrel over alleged infidelity on the part of the woman. The man allegedly held the woman hostage in their bed room, tied her to a chair and plugged a pressing iron which he used to run over all her body including her private part.

Swift arrival of policemen

Screams from the woman attracted the attention of neighbors who quickly alerted the police at Ago-Okota Station. A team of policemen swiftly arrived the scene and arrested the man after which they rushed the woman to a nearby hospital where doctors are battling to revive her from unconsciousness.

Father dumbfounded: Eyewitness account said the father of the man who quickly rushed to the police station on hearing the news was dumbfounded when he was told that the son perpetrated the heinous act over allegations that he, the father, was sleeping with the son’s wife. At this point, the visibly shocked man lamented publicly that it is a taboo for him to indulge in that kind of act, stating that he had severally in the past warned the son to stop maltreating the wife. He reportedly disclosed further that the wife had run to his house several times to escape being brutalized by the husband and each time, he would not only rebuke his son but provide money for his family so that there would be peace.

At the time of this report, the wife of the man whom hospital sources said may have suffered first degree burns, was still lying unconscious in a private hospital at Ago-Palace way, while her husband is in police cell.

A neighbor reacts: Efforts made to speak with the father of the suspect were not successful as the man was said to had left the police station in tears, agonizing openly the fate that befell members of his family. But a neighbour at their 3, Lambe Street, apartment corroborated claims of the man’s father stating that the father had been mediating between the son and his wife for a long time.

According to the man who simply identified himself as Papa Ginika, “I am going to allow the man’s father, whenever you meet him, to tell you the character of his son because he knows him very well. But, on the allegation that the father was sleeping with his wife, Henry was only trying to rope the man into this mess.

“I know that man very well and I can vouch for him. He can not sleep with his son’s wife for any reason. But I know that the son’s grievance is that his father has not been supporting him each time he maltreated his wife. He normally comes here to abuse his son and ask him to stop beating the wife.

Too many quarrels

“They got married only two years ago and I really don’t know what actually went wrong in that marriage. But I discovered that the man and his wife have been having too many quarrels and his father has been coming to settle the crisis. I really don’t know what got into Henry’s head the day he did that. I see no reason why he would kill his only child that I usually see crawl around the compound with other kids. And since this incident occurred, I have been trying to erase the picture of the woman carrying her child. When I saw the dead child, I was the one looking for a jute bag (Ghana-Must Go) to carry the corpse for burial.”

Concerted efforts made to speak with the suspect inside the cell failed as the police insisted that he could only speak when the case gets to SCID, Panti. When Crime Alert visited the hospital where the woman was admitted, doctors said she was still unconscious and advised that the police should authorize all visitations. It was also not possible to trace the father of the suspect as he was said to have gone back to his own house.

Police reacts

Confirming the incident, Lagos State Police spokesman, Joseph Jaiyaoba told Crime Alert that the suspect will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigations Department, SCID, Panti, today for further investigations assuring that justice must prevail at the end of the day.

A 29-year-old Togolese trader has been grabbed by the Odorkor District Police Command for burning a 6-year-old child with a hot iron. Jennifer Mensah, according to information, burnt the child with the iron after being told by a supposed man of God that the victim was possessed by an evil spirit.

Narrating the story to DAILY GUIDE, DSP Jordan Quaye, Odorkor District Police Commander said the police received a tip-off that the trader, Jennifer Mensah, had locked the child in a room at Odorkor near Kpogas furniture for the past two weeks because of a claim that the victim was possessed by an evil spirit.

When police personnel got to the scene around 1:00pm yesterday, the child was still locked inside the room. “We managed to break into the room to free the child,” the police capo said.

Bruises were found all over the victim’s body including the head, back, vagina and other vital places when she was physically examined at the police hospital. “We immediately arrested the suspect and sent her to the station for questioning,” the police stated.

LEARN ABOUT GOOGLE GOGGLE | BROWSE WITH YOUR EYEGLASS

If you’re the sort of person who spends ages looking for your mobile phone, Google may have the answer.
And the solution will be right in front of your eyes – literally.

The technology giant is close to launching a pair of futuristic glasses that would deliver all the services of a smartphone straight to the wearer’s eye.

Google glasses would deliver the smartphone experience straight to your eyes

Featuring a miniature display on one lens, the hi-tech specs allow users to surf the internet or deal with text messages and emails without lifting a finger.

The screen is controlled with a ‘mouse’ which is moved simply by tilting your head. And should you still wish to actually talk to someone, it is believed the glasses will let you make calls using an in-built microphone.

Reports suggest the device, which would revolutionise the smartphone market, could be available by the end of this year costing less than £380 – making it cheaper than Apple’s iPhone.

Users would also be able to see through the lenses as normal and go about their daily business, then with a flick of the head activate the display and start surfing.

It has been reported the glasses will resemble Oakley's Thump sunglasses

The glasses would use the same Google operating system that powers Android smartphones and tablets and would connect to the internet through 3G or next-generation 4G mobile networks.

They would also be equipped with GPS mapping technology and motion sensors, as well as a camera. It brings the prospect that wearers could be given information instantly on the buildings they are looking at, on nearby landmarks or friends who are in the area.

But the devices will also bring new potential for advertisers to reach users in ever more personal situations, such as in a lift, a restaurant or relaxing on their sofa.

Seth Weintraub, from the 9 to 5 Google blog, revealed clues to how the glasses would work. ‘The system currently used is a head tilting to scroll and click,’ he said. ‘We are told it is very quick to learn and once the user is adept at navigation, it becomes second nature and almost indistinguishable to outside users.

‘These glasses, we heard, have a front-facing camera used to gather information and could aid in augmented reality apps. The heads-up display is only for one eye and on the side.’

The glasses are apparently being developed in Google’s top-secret research laboratory in Mountain View, California. Apple is also thought to be developing pioneering technology, such as smartphones that can be worn as watches or sewn into clothing.

WOMAN ARRESTED FOR KILLING HER MOTHER

The police have arrested a 38-year-old woman, Bolanle Abiola, for allegedly killing her septuagenarian mother in the Imeko-Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State.

Bolanle was arrested with an unidentified male accomplice for allegedly killing the 70-year-woman in the Pedepo area of Imeko.

The suspect, who trades in clothes in Abeokuta, the state capital, allegedly committed the crime about 9:00pm last Wednesday when she visited her mother in her residence at Imeko.

Family members who pleaded anonymity told SUNDAY PUNCH that Bolanle, who had often accused her mother of using diabolical means to prevent her from finding a suitor, once threatened to kill the septuagenarian over the matter.

According to the family members, Bolanle and the unidentified male companion had, on Wednesday night, arrived at her mother’s residence pretending to have come on a visit.

Thinking that the male companion was her daughter’s fiancé, the deceased mother was said to have warmly welcomed the couple into her house.

Bolanle and her male accomplice then allegedly dragged the old woman out of her home and killed her before they both escaped into the bush while it was raining.

It was further learnt that Bolanle was arrested on Thursday when she attempted to flee the town in a commercial vehicle.

The first son of the deceased, Abudu, confirmed the killing of his mother by the suspects and added that Bolanle was the third of his late mother’s six children.

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident.

“It’s true that Bolanle went to her mother’s house to slaughter her. She’s in our custody and she will soon appear in court. All those involved have been arrested,” he said.

In a related development, the men of the Ekiti State Police Command have started investigations into the disappearance of a 70-year-old man, Mr. Abiodun Adeleye.

The septuagenarian went to his farm in Igede-Ekiti in Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area last Wednesday but did not return.

456 Nigerians Are In Brazilian Prison

The Chairman, House Committee on Diaspora Affairs, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has said 456 Nigerians may continue to languish in Brazilian jails, if the government does not have a bilateral agreement with the country.

In an interview with SUNDAY PUNCH, Dabiri-Erewa said about 100 Nigerians were also in detention in Ukraine for various allegations, adding that the country had called on Nigeria for their repatriation but this has not taken place.

The ex-broadcaster added that Brazil had invited Nigeria to sign a repatriation treaty with it since 2009 but that Nigeria was yet to respond due to its lackadaisical attitude towards protecting the rights of its citizens.

Dabiri-Erewa, who was in Brazil recently on a fact-finding mission, stated that a 72-year-old grandmother, Fausat Aosede, 13 women and 443 other Nigerians languished in Brazilian jail for drug-related offences.

“The Nigerians may stay longer in jail because Nigeria does not have a repatriation agreement with Brazil. The country sent a document to facilitate the agreement in 2009 but it is still awaiting a response from Nigeria. Should Nigeria have an agreement with Brazil, their release will be sped up.”

The lawmaker however said Aosede, who was in Brazil for medical treatment and was later held for drug trafficking, would be repatriated as the Brazilian law disallowed detention of persons over 70.

On the fate of others, Dabiri-Erewa said, “We need to have a roundtable discussion with Brazil and sign an agreement before we can repatriate our people who are either serving jail terms in detention or on trial for various offences. It all depends on how seriously Nigeria takes the issue.”
