NYSC MAY RELOCATES CORP MEMBERS FROM KANO AND KADUNA DUE TO BOKO HARAM BOMBING

As a result of the recent bombings in Kaduna and Kano states, the National Youth Service Corps may relocate corps members from the states for security reasons.

The Deputy Director, Public Relations of the NYSC, Mr. Peter Atilola, told SUNDAY PUNCH that though there was currently no plan to withdraw corps members en masse from the two states, corps members serving in those states could apply individually to be relocated on the grounds of worsened security situation.



“For now, there is no plan for relocation of corps members from Kaduna and Kano states, but if any corps member feels he or she is not safe in these places, he or she can apply and would be relocated,” he said.

It would be recalled that the Minister of Youth Development, Bolaji Abdullahi, had ordered NYSC not to post corps members to Borno and Yobe states late last year when there were frequent bombings and gun attacks by suspected members of the Boko Haram sect, resulting in the death of hundreds of people.

The corps members who were initially posted to the states were directed to observe their orientation exercise in Benue and Nassarawa states, and were reposted to all states of the federation, except for Borno and Yobe States.

With some deadly bomb attacks in the past few months including Easter bomb attack which killed about 40 people, the security situation has drastically worsened in Kaduna and Kano states, resulting in some residents relocating to other parts of the country they considered safer.

The Special Adviser to the minister, Mr. Julius Ogunro, told SUNDAY PUNCH that the policy of the Ministry for Youth Development on the security of corps members remained that corps members would not be posted to any part of the country where their security could not be guaranteed.

Ogunro added that the policy would be applied to any state of the federation, just the way it was applied in the case of Borno and Yobe states.

In a recent interview with journalists, Abdullahi said the security of corps members was very important to Federal Government, noting that “the youth service scheme is not worth the life of anybody.”

He said, “One of the major initiatives we have taken is to develop a security alert system that maps the country—some kind of early warning—and to take decision on posting of corps members based on our awareness of the security circumstances in various locations.

“So we are not saying because NYSC is a national service, then we must post corps members to all parts of the country. Our pragmatic approach is to say wherever there are real or potential security challenges, we will not post corps members to such places.”

The minister also stated the NYSC would not have orientation camps in places where there was real and potential security challenge and would not post corps members to such places until there was an evidence of significant improvement.

456 Nigerians Are In Brazilian Prison

The Chairman, House Committee on Diaspora Affairs, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has said 456 Nigerians may continue to languish in Brazilian jails, if the government does not have a bilateral agreement with the country.

In an interview with SUNDAY PUNCH, Dabiri-Erewa said about 100 Nigerians were also in detention in Ukraine for various allegations, adding that the country had called on Nigeria for their repatriation but this has not taken place.

The ex-broadcaster added that Brazil had invited Nigeria to sign a repatriation treaty with it since 2009 but that Nigeria was yet to respond due to its lackadaisical attitude towards protecting the rights of its citizens.

Dabiri-Erewa, who was in Brazil recently on a fact-finding mission, stated that a 72-year-old grandmother, Fausat Aosede, 13 women and 443 other Nigerians languished in Brazilian jail for drug-related offences.

“The Nigerians may stay longer in jail because Nigeria does not have a repatriation agreement with Brazil. The country sent a document to facilitate the agreement in 2009 but it is still awaiting a response from Nigeria. Should Nigeria have an agreement with Brazil, their release will be sped up.”

The lawmaker however said Aosede, who was in Brazil for medical treatment and was later held for drug trafficking, would be repatriated as the Brazilian law disallowed detention of persons over 70.

On the fate of others, Dabiri-Erewa said, “We need to have a roundtable discussion with Brazil and sign an agreement before we can repatriate our people who are either serving jail terms in detention or on trial for various offences. It all depends on how seriously Nigeria takes the issue.”

TRAGEDY IN EASTER AS CHURCH COLLAPSE, TEN 10 DIED IN BENUE

Tragedy struck in Benue State yesterday as a Catholic Church in Adamgbe, Mbayongu district in Vandeikya local government area collapsed and killed 10 worshipers.

The worshippers mostly women and children were in the church for Easter vigil service.

According to an eyewitness, midway into the service the pillars gave way, and the roof came down on the worshippers killing 10 on the spot while many sustained severe injuries.

More than 10 bodies have been pulled out of the building with many crying and wailing for help in the trapped building. Some eyewitnesses suspect that the casualty figure could be much higher.

Adangbe is about 10 kilometers away from Vandikya on the Benue -Obudu federal highway.

BOKO HARAM | JTF RESCUES KIDNAPPED HOUSEWIVES AND 13 CHILDREN

Two suspected members of the Islamist group, Boko Haram, died, yesterday, when a primed vehicle exploded during an encounter with security forces from the Joint Task Force (JTF) at their hideout in Sabo Gandu, Kano metropolis.

Military authorities confirmed that two soldiers also sustained injuries during the combat operation that led to the rescue of five housewives and 13 children between the ages of one and six. The housewives and children were paraded before journalists.

“None of them was harmed as you can see for yourselves, but what we have done and always ready to do is to execute our job professionally leaving little or no room for abuse or heavy handedness”.

Brigade Commander of 3 Motorized Brigade, Nigerian Army, Kano, Brigadier General Iliyasu Garba said. Garba had earlier conducted reporters round the Boko Haram suspected hideout. According to him, the attack on the building was preemptive to contain the plan by the sect to launch fresh assault on the city.

“The suspects had been planning a major offensive with a car already primed with IEDs that was detonated the moment they noticed the presence of the security forces around their hideout and it shattered some of them ”, he stated.

The army chief alleged that some of the housewives and children rescued during the operation were foreigners, adding that further investigation by the Immigration Service would confirm their identities.

He said that the JTF had recorded major victory against the insurgent in recent days in Kano, pointing out that soldiers at check points intercepted weapons from cyclists within the metropolis and that investigations were in full swing.

Items recovered during yesterday’s operation include two AK 47, three magazines, 36b rounds of ammunition, 181 rounds of 7.2 MM, one short gun, two unexploded IEDs and two vehicles with one completely shattered during the blast.

The Director, Department of Security Service in Kano State, Mr. Akpan Bassey, also speaking, yesterday, revealed that security forces had been trailing the sect members for some time and successfully pinned them to the hideout before the operation.

FIRE ATTACK IN NATIONAL HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY

Fire broke out on Thursday at the complex of the National Assembly, Abuja for the second time this year.

Witnesses say the fire, which was immediately extinguished, began at the complex of the National Assembly did not affect the building where the nation’s House of Representatives and Senate meet.

It was not immediately clear if there were any injuries.

A Fire Service Director of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Sani Saidu, said the incident was caused by power fluctuation.



A fire broke out at the complex on 14 January. It was blamed on a malfunctioning air conditioner.

Electrical fires are common in Nigeria, as electricity supply from the Power Holding Company (PHCN) surges and wanes, unable to provide light to the country of more than 160 million people. Those who can afford it rely on generators for power.

Ojerinde, who spoke to newsmen at a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, said the examination will hold in Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Benin, London, Saudi Arabia and South Africa.

The registrar explained that the number shows an increase of about 10,338 candidates when compared with the 1,493,603 students that sat for the examination last year.

FRAUSTER | ANALYSIS OF WHAT MS. ARUNMA OTEH SPEND ON FOOD IN A DAY

A receipt obtained on Tuesday revealed how the Director-General, Securities and Exchange Commission, Ms. Arumah Oteh, allegedly spent the sum of N850,000 at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja.

There were, however, discrepancies in the figures on the receipt.

The receipt, which was dated March 24, 2010, was issued at exactly 9.57pm to the SEC boss. The bill was issued by Zuma Grill Restaurant and it contained expenses incurred by Oteh in three distinct total figures.

In the first category, the bill recorded that Oteh was served two Aquafina Large, at the rate of N1,000; one Teem Soda Water, N500; five bottles of Star, N3,000; one 7Up, N500; two Chapman Large, N1,700; three Fresh Crayfish, N13,500; one Classical Snail, N4,500; four Lobster, N18,400; three Trad. Nativ. Poten, N12,000; one Roast Pork Belly, N4,000 four Pan Salmon, N19,200; Food, N71,600; Beverage A, N3,000; and Beverage N4,100.

The total in this category, according to Transcorp, was N78,700 as against a total of N157,000 computed by our correspondent.

The second category had four crème Brulee, N10,000; one Fruit Salad, N1,800; Food N83,400; Beverage A, N3,000 and Beverage N, N4,100. The total due was placed at N90,500 in contrast to N102,300 computed by our correspondent.

The last total revealed that Oteh spent N91,400, which is against N92,300 by our calculations. She was served two Tea Earl Grey at N900; Food, N84,300; Beverage A, N3,000; and Beverage N, N4,100. 
A comprehensive total of the three categories as revealed by the hotel showed that the SEC boss spent N260,600. This, however, is against the total computation of N351,600.

Meanwhile, in a letter obtained  from SEC, the commission refuted that its boss consumed meal worth N850,000 and never submitted such a bill to the SEC.

The letter reads “The bill referred to at the public hearing related to Ms Oteh’s hotel expenses during her stay at the Hilton following her assumption of duty.

“We have reviewed her hotel expenses during her stay, and the highest charge for food was N83,400 on March 24, 2010. This bill was in respect of an official dinner hosted by the SEC with a group of international capital market experts who were visiting Nigeria to provide technical assistance to SEC Nigeria.”

37 CULTIST WERE NAPPED IN CALABAR

37 persons suspected to be members of secret cults, which have been terrorizing Calabar, the Cross River State capital, were, on Friday, arraigned at a Magistrate Court, Calabar presided over by Chief Magistrate Emmanuel Okokon for alleged armed robbery and then remanded at Afokang Prison.

Residents of Calabar, for over four days, had lived in fears following the activities of persons suspected to be members of secret cults. The state police public relations officer, Mr. Hogan Bassey, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP, identified the cultists as members of the Vikings and KKK.

The suspects were also said to have engaged in supremacy battle over which group controls a political party’s congresses. 
Reading the charge, a police prosecutor, Inspector Nku Jones, said the suspects and others at large on 13 March, 2012 at about “1900 hours at Lugard Street Calabar while armed with offensive weapons to wit, locally made pistols and machetes, did attack and robbed one Effiom Akpan of the sum of N500,000”.

Magistrate Okokon, after hearing the charge, adjourned the matter to 9 April, and ordered that the suspects be remanded at Afokang Prisons in Calabar South.

BOKO HARAM BOMB CHURCH | KILL PASTOR AND 10 OTHERS

The Islamic terror group attacked the city of Kaduna, stamping out 10 people, burning the Assembles of God Mission in Kufara and leaving the parish pastor, Innocent Chukwuemeka Mari dead in the attack.

About three villages were attacked in Chikun LGA in Kaduna state.

ELEVEN CULTIST ARRESTED AT LASU AFTER A CULT CLASH

The Lagos State Police Command Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, has arrested eleven cult members who claimed to be students of the Lagos State University, LASU.They were nabbed at Ijanikin, a suburb of Lagos along Lagos/Badagry Expressway, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria.

 

 A police source told AmeboNEWS that two members of Eiye Confraternity had hired a commercial motorcyclist (okada rider) to take them to Ijanikin where they shot a rival cultist, a member of Black Axe Confraternity. The okada rider, after the shooting, contacted SARS operatives who arrested the suspect’s accomplice identified as Wasiu. 

The cultist, who fired the shot managed to escape, but Wasiu led policemen to the hideout of the cultists at Ijanikin, where other cult members were arrested, the police source revealed. According to the source, items recovered from the suspected cultists include three locally made cut to size rifles, one black bag, one locally made pistol, one live cartridge, four axes, one cutlass, one black beret and one phone. 

Those arrested include Amos Acholo, 25, an indigene of Kogi State who claimed to be a businessman but a part-time student of LASU; Ojo Ola-Oluwa, 28, from Osun State, Olupooye Foluso, 27, claimed to be a student of Political Science at LASU, Haruna Olanrewaju, 28, from Kwara State said he is not a LASU student but joined the cult because he is jobless and Ismail Alli, 24, claimed he is a businessman from Sokoto State and he dropped out of school. 

Others are: a 23-year old Malian, Jiba Abdulahi who said he is into business; Adeyinka Phillips, 25, claimed to be a Lagos State indigene and a student of Computer Science at Lagos State Polytechnic;

 Edeh Michael said he attended Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, Ijanikin while another suspect, Irikivewe Charles told the police he is still struggling for admission. Another member of the cult group, Udemeobong from Cross River State, said he is a 200 level student at LASU. He confessed to the police that he was initiated into the cult last year when he visited his friend in Benin City, Edo State.

BOKO HARAM'S CONDITIONS FOR CEASE FIRE

After years of frequent bomb attacks on security formations, religious houses and killings of innocent citizens within the northern states, the Boko Haram sect has agreed to cease fire on two conditions.

The group has named the president of the Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria, Sheik Ahmed Datti, as their mediator. It said the choice of Datti was based on the fact that its former leader, the late Mohammed Yusuf, served as a member that represented Borno State in the council of Sharia in Nigeria, the cleric could be trusted not to betray the confidence reposed in him to speak for the sect, a source close to the group told LEADERSHIP yesterday.

The source added that the group was ever ready to stop the bombings in the next four weeks only if the federal government would release all its arrested members as well as guarantee the security and safety of all members whose names would be given to the federal government through Datti.

The source said, "What the sect is asking the federal government now is to give them the assurance that once they come to the public after the hostilities, their safety and security would be guaranteed.

While describing last Sunday's Jos incident as unfortunate, he said all officers have been directed to subject themselves to searches. He called on prominent citizens to cooperate with soldiers by doing likewise.
He listed areas that require transformation to include change of attitude, de-politicization to professionalism, and modernization with a purpose, change of ideas rather than just modernization and adaptation to changing security environment.

FATHER AND SON IMPREGNATE A 15 YEAR OLD PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPIL

A father and son who had sex with a 15-year-old primary four pupil, resulting in pregnancy, have been sentenced to a total of 44 years in prison.

The Koforidua Circuit Court which handed out the sentence Thursday, gave the father, Daniel Kwaku Danquah, a farmer aged 43, a maximum of 24 years while his son, Moses Danquah, aged 23, a cushion liner, was given 20 years, both with hard labour.



The incident occurred at Nobi, a village near Akyem Tafo in the Eastern Region on different dates in November and December, last year and January, this year.

Both father and son, who were charged with defilement, pleaded guilty before the court presided over by Madam Wilhelmina Hammond.

Presenting the facts of the case to the packed court, the prosecutor, Inspector Patrick Adzadza, said the girl and the convicts lived in the same vicinity at Nobi.

He said sometime in November, 2011, when the girl’s grandmother with whom she was staying left for Somanya, their home town, for a funeral, Kwaku Danquah forcibly had sex with her in her grandmother’s room.

Inspector Adzadza said after the act, Kwaku Danquah warned her not to disclose what happened to anyone else he (Kwaku Danquah) would cause her arrest.

He told the court that in December, 2011, Moses Danquah, son of Kwaku Danquah, also had sex with the girl on three separate occasions in the same room and when he attempted to repeat the act for the fourth time in January, 2012, he detected that the girl was pregnant.

When her grandmother detected that the victim had become pregnant and questioned her, the girl told her that although Kwaku Danquah was responsible for the pregnancy, his son Moses also had sex with her on three occasions.

He said both the father and the son admitted having sex with the girl in their caution statements and that a medical report put the girl’s last menstrual period at October, 2011.

CHRISTIAN REVENGE IN JOS. KILLED MORE THAN 10 PEOPLE

After the suicide car bomb attack on a Catholic church Sunday Christian youths killed at least 10 people in reprisal attacks after a suspected suicide bomber hit a Catholic church in the central Nigerian city of Jos on Sunday, killing three people, authorities said.

"The situation is bad," health commissioner for Jos Sati Dakwat told Reuters. "Several were killed in the reprisal attacks, more than 10."



A Reuters reporter at the scene of the church bombing was unable to gain access, as the police had cordoned off the area around Finber's Catholic Church in the Rayfield suburb of Jos.

"We haven't got actual figures of injured yet, but at least three people have been confirmed dead by our men attending the scene of the blast," the Jos coordinator for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Al Hassan Aliyu said.

Earlier NEMA called it a suspected suicide bombing, but Aliyu said this was not yet confirmed.

Islamist sect Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for a wave of bomb attacks on churches across Nigeria since Christmas Day. The bombing campaign has raised fears that the group is trying to ignite sectarian conflict in Africa's most populous country, split roughly evenly between Christians and Muslims.

In the past decade Jos has become the main flashpoint for tensions between Nigeria's Christian and Muslim communities. Bombers have targeted its churches many times since Christmas.

A Reuters witness watched angry Christians set up road blocks near the church. In the past, such a move has preceded retaliatory violence against Muslims.

Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is forbidden", wants sharia law more widely applied across Nigeria.

ARMED ROBBER ATTACK COMMUTTER BUS | RAPE ALL 18 FEMALE ONBOARD

Eighteen women aboard a commuter luxury bus were reportedly raped in the wee hours of yesterday armed bandits few kilometres from Okene, Kogi State. The victims, comprising single and married women, were among passengers in the ill-fated bus with a Lagos registration number XM753 AKD, operated by a popular transport company (name withheld by us), which was travelling from Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, to Abuja, when the incident occurred at about 2.am.
One of the victims, who narrated the episode to Daily Sun, said the journey had been smooth from Port Harcourt till a short distance from Okene, when they ran into an ambush laid by the robbers.
 
I was asleep when suddenly, I heard the sound of gunshots. The robbers shot at the driver side in a bid to force the vehicle to a halt. It was then I realised that they had barricaded the road with logs of wood. Then, they ordered all of us to disembark and marched us into the bush.

After dispossessing us of our money and other valuable items, then, they raped all the women in the bus, numbering about 18, one after the other. It was a traumatic experience which lasted for about three hours, one of the female victims who declined giving her name recounted.
Daily Sun learnt that it was indeed a pathetic scene as some of the female victims who could not conceal their pains wept profusely as they narrated their ordeal when the bus arrived its terminal at the Utako district of Abuja at about 10 am yesterday.
Kogi State police spokesman, ASP Okasanmi Ajayi, however, said the incident was not officially reported at the command. “I have made contacts to the various police divisions, but there is no record of the incident,” he told Daily Sun on phone.

Styled on the Taliban, its methods have become more sophisticated in the past six months, and it has widened its targets beyond the police and other authority figures to include ordinary Christian civilians.

On Feb. 26 a suicide bomber drove a car packed with explosives into a church in Jos, killing two people and wounding 38. Christian youths beat two Muslims to death in revenge.

Other cities have also been affected.

A bomb at a Catholic Church in Madala, just outside the capital Abuja, killed 37 people and wounded 57 on Christmas Day. Another blast struck a church in Jos.

Boko Haram claimed the attacks, citing violence against Muslims by Christians in Jos as justification.

Despite its Islamist ideology, it is Muslims in the north of Nigeria who mostly bear the brunt of its attacks.

Suspected sect members shot dead a traditional ruler in the northeastern Gombe state, as he left a mosque after Friday prayers two days ago.

On Thursday, a Briton and an Italian held hostage in Nigeria were killed by their captors after being held for almost a year by what security officials said was a Boko Haram faction, although a spokesman for the sect denied any involvement.

Boko Haram used to be confined to Nigeria's northeastern state of Borno. But the sect, or several factions of it, have expanded in the past six months to operate in at least 10 states across the north, and have struck the capital.
