Gunmen suspected to be members of Boko Haram on Saturday killed three people – a soldier, a policeman and a civilian - and injured several others when they attacked the Azare police station in Katagum logal government area of Bauchi State.
LEADERSHIP gathered that the incident, which threw the area into panic, occurred yesterday at about 1pm when the unidentified gunmen stormed the police station with locally made bombs and rocket launchers which made the entire building collapse.
Confirming the incident to journalists, the commissioner of police, Bauchi State Command, Mr. Ikechukwu Aduba, explained that about 30 policemen on duty fought back the attackers for four hours, leading to the death of three people including one soldier, policeman and a civilian even as several others sustained various degrees of injuries.
He added that the attackers had come with about 20 rocket launchers, guns and locally made bombs which made them succeed in destroying the mobile police base and the area commander’s office.
Aduba further said that, apart from the police station, the gunmen also raided the new generation banks in the area and stole undisclosed amount of money, just as the residence of notable hunter, Alhaji Ali Kwara was also attacked.
The police commissioner, however, claimed that the suspects came from neighbouring states, saying that efforts were being made to fish them out.
He appealed to traditional rulers in the state to form vigilante groups in their domains with a view to complementing the effort of security agencies in ensuring peace and harmony.
Also reacting, the chief press secretary to the state governor, Mr Ishola Adeyemi, condemned the dastardly act and asked people to be security-conscious by reporting any suspicious movements to the police so as to avert such terrorist attacks in the future.
The CPS also applauded the effort of the police in tackling the incident in good time, saying it might have resulted in more casualties.
Meanwhile, a ghastly auto crash involving a trailer and a bus at Masha village, along the Mokwa-Bokani road in Mokwa local government area of Niger State, has killed nine people, leaving 11 others injured.
LEADERSHIP gathered that the bus marked AE 91WMK was coming from Sokoto to Lagos when the DAF tanker marked XA 197GZA carrying 39, 000 litres of petrol from the south ran over the bus.
It was gathered that the bus driver and the passenger in the front seat died on the spot while seven others died when the bus caught fire following spills from the tanker.
LEADERSHIP further gathered that before any rescue could come, seven people had already been burnt beyond recognition while others were injured.

An eye witness told LEADERSHIP that the bus was on the right lane before the tanker lost control and ran over it, even as the driver ran away immediately after the accident to the surprise of the villagers who came on rescue mission.
Niger State police command’s spokesman ASP Richard Oguche, confirmed the incident, saying that the body of the nine people had been deposited at Mokwa General Hospital’s mortuary whereas the injured victims were rushed to the hospital and other referral centres.
